Both the sponsor and the person being sponsored complete and sign it, and it sits at the heart of a spousal or partner sponsorship application. What is the IMM 5532 form?

The IMM 5532, sometimes written as imm5532, is the form where you tell IRCC how your relationship started, how it developed, and what your life together looks like. It applies when you sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent child to become a permanent resident. In practice it is the core relationship form in almost every spousal and partner file.

Two people fill it out: the sponsor (the Canadian citizen or permanent resident) and the principal applicant (the person being sponsored). The whole point of the form is to help an officer judge whether the relationship is genuine and not entered into mainly to get status, which is the test IRCC applies to who you can sponsor.

One timely note. IRCC paused new intake for the Parents and Grandparents Program in July 2026, but sponsoring a spouse, partner, or dependent child is a separate program that remains open. If your plan is to sponsor a partner, the IMM 5532 is still the form you need.

How to fill out the IMM 5532 form: Parts A, B and C

Think of the form as three conversations. First IRCC wants to know about the sponsor, then about the sponsored person, then about the two of you as a couple. It maps to three parts.

• Part A, Sponsorship Evaluation and Information about the Sponsor: completed by the sponsor. It covers five years of employment history with no gaps, anyone you have sponsored or co-signed for before, your full address history with no gaps and no P.O. boxes, a consent question about a marriage-fraud investigation, and the sponsor's signature.

• Part B, Information about the Principal Applicant: completed by the person being sponsored. It covers their information, the same consent question, and their signature.

• Part C, Information about the relationship: completed by both of you. It covers how the relationship developed, a space to add anything else that supports it, an interpreter declaration if one was used, and both signatures.

A few rules trip people up. You must answer every question. Where the form asks for employment or address history, IRCC wants an unbroken timeline with no gaps, so if you were unemployed or between homes, say so and explain it rather than leaving a blank. The consent question about a marriage-fraud investigation is voluntary, and choosing "No" does not hurt your application. If you run out of room, add a separate page for that section and upload it as a JPG, JPEG, or PDF using the document type "other."

How to sign the IMM 5532 form

The IMM 5532 must be digitally signed and dated by both the sponsor and the sponsored person. By signing, each person certifies that they understand the questions and that their answers are complete, accurate, and true.

To open and sign it, use a computer, not a phone or tablet, since the form may not open on mobile devices. Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader version 10 or higher. IRCC's official steps then describe this method: download the completed form, go to File and select Print, choose "Microsoft Print to PDF" as the printer (a Windows feature), save the file, and sign by typing your name in the signature field.

The official page does not give separate steps for a Mac, so if you are wondering how to sign the IMM 5532 on a Mac, the practical equivalent is to use the Print dialog's PDF menu to save a fresh PDF, then type your name in the signature field. If the field will not accept typed text, open your saved PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader and sign it there.

If your relationship is genuine, this form is nothing to fear. You can always provide more, and more is usually better: photos together, messages over time, joint documents. The danger sits on the other side of the line. When something looks off, officers have real tools. They can ask for extra proof, request your photos and messages, or call you both in for an interview where they test the details separately: when and how you met, how often you are intimate, when each family learned about the relationship.

This is where the IMM 5532 earns its weight. What you write on it gets measured against everything else you say, and it can be pulled back up years later. The files that fall apart are rarely the ones missing a photo. They are the ones where the couple's account of when and how they met, or when the relationship became serious, does not line up across the forms, the evidence, and the interview. A story that does not match itself is a credibility problem, and credibility is exactly what a genuine relationship is judged on.
