Inland spousal sponsorship canada processing time is currently about 25 months for applicants outside
Quebec, according to IRCC's processing times tool last updated May 12, 2026. That is the time from receipt
of a complete application to a permanent residence decision.
Current Inland Spousal Sponsorship Canada Processing Time
As of May 12, 2026, IRCC reports the following for spousal and common-law partner sponsorship:
Application type | Province | Processing time | In queue |
Inland (spouse/common-law in Canada) | Outside Quebec | About 25 months | ~55,200 |
Outland (spouse/common-law outside Canada) | Outside Quebec | About 16 months | ~51,300 |
Quebec inland or outland | Quebec | Separate MIFI process | Not published |
IRCC notes that processing times may increase. Figures reflect the 80th percentile of completed
applications. Check the IRCC processing times tool on canada.ca monthly for the current figure.
Inland vs. Outland: Why the 9-Month Gap
The inland route processes everything through a single IRCC centre in Canada. Both the sponsorship
eligibility check and the permanent residence application move in sequence through one office. Outland
applications split the work between IRCC in Canada (sponsorship approval) and a visa office abroad (PR
application), spreading the processing load across multiple offices globally, saving outland applicants
outside Quebec roughly 9 months as of May 2026.
That said, inland has one significant advantage: if your spouse is already in Canada legally, they can apply
for a spousal open work permit (OWP) at the same time as the permanent residence application. The OWP
allows your spouse to work for any employer in Canada while the PR is pending. For a 25-month process,
this matters.

What the Inland Timeline Looks Like
Here is a realistic sequence for an inland application outside Quebec:
Submission. The processing clock starts when IRCC receives your complete package, not when it is
mailed.
AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt). Typically within 4 to 8 weeks. Provides your application number.
Biometrics. Most applicants receive a biometrics request within the first few months.
Medical exam. IRCC requests a medical exam around the 12 to 18 month mark.
Final decision and COPR. For most files outside Quebec, this arrives in the 20 to 25 month range.
An incomplete application is the most common cause of delays beyond the published estimate. Missing
signatures, expired police certificates, or a medical exam that expires during processing all pause the file
until corrected documents arrive.
Is your application past the 25-month mark without a decision? A file review can identify whether IRCC has flagged a concern. Book a consultation with Amir Ansari, RCIC to review your file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my spouse work in Canada while the inland sponsorship is in process?
Yes. Under the inland route, your spouse can apply for a spousal open work permit at the same time as the
permanent residence application. The OWP is issued under LMIA exemption code A74 and allows work with
almost any employer in Canada while the PR application is pending.
How long does inland spousal sponsorship take in Quebec?
Quebec adds a second stage: after IRCC processes the federal PR application, MIFI must separately
approve a Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ). MIFI does not publish its current spousal CSQ processing
time. The combined timeline typically extends beyond the federal figure.
What if IRCC returns my application as incomplete?
IRCC returns the package with a letter specifying the deficiency and refunds the submission fee. You must
correct the issue and resubmit. The processing clock restarts from zero on the date IRCC receives the
corrected application.
What else can slow down an inland sponsorship application?
Expired supporting documents, complex relationship history with limited proof of genuineness, and criminal
or security history triggering additional screening. For couples where one partner is eligible for Express
Entry, it may also be worth reviewing whether a Canadian Experience Class pathway is faster.
Every inland sponsorship file has different risk factors. Amir Ansari, RCIC, can review your documentation before you submit and help you avoid the issues that extend processing timelines. Reserve a consultation to get started.
