Who Can Be Sponsored Under Family Class Immigration Canada?

Canada's family sponsorship program covers several categories of family members:

  • Spouses and common-law partners (including same-sex partners)

  • Conjugal partners living abroad for at least one year

  • Dependent children under 22 years old (or older if financially dependent due to disability)

  • Parents and grandparents (through the Parents and Grandparents Program, or Super Visa)

To be eligible as a sponsor, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, and living in Canada (or intending to return if you are a citizen abroad). You must not be bankrupt, on social assistance, or have a criminal record for certain offences.

The Family Sponsorship Canada Application Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Determine Your Application Stream

The first decision is whether to apply inland or outland:

  • Outland (outside Canada): Your spouse or partner applies at a visa office abroad. Processing is generally faster. Current IRCC processing time: approximately 16 months (51,300 applications in queue as of May 12, 2026).

  • Inland (inside Canada): Your spouse or partner is already in Canada and you apply together within Canada. You may apply for an Open Work Permit as part of the application. Current IRCC processing time: approximately 25 months (55,200 applications in queue as of May 12, 2026).

The right stream depends on your partner's current location, visa status, and your timeline. See our full breakdown in Navigating In-Land Sponsorships in Canada and Spousal Sponsorship Canada Explained.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Both the sponsor and the sponsored person must submit documents. Required items typically include:

  • Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residence

  • Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, joint accounts, photos together, correspondence)

  • Completed IRCC application forms (IMM 1344, IMM 0008, IMM 5406, and others depending on your case)

  • Police clearance certificates for the sponsored person

  • Medical exams from a designated physician

  • Proof of financial support (if applicable)

For parents and grandparents, you must also meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) threshold: LICO + 30% for the most recent three tax years. For a family of two, this is $47,549 (based on the 2024 LICO table). Most spousal and partner sponsors do not face a minimum income requirement.

Step 3: Submit the Sponsorship Application

You will submit two applications simultaneously: the sponsorship application (filed by you, the Canadian sponsor) and the permanent residence application (filed by your family member). Both must be submitted together to IRCC.

Pay the required fees, which as of 2026 include a processing fee, the Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF), and biometrics if required.

Step 4: Await Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR)

IRCC will send an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) once your application is received and found to be complete. This confirms your place in queue. For inland applications, your spouse may be eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit at this stage.

Step 5: Biometrics and Medical Exams

IRCC will request biometrics (fingerprints and photos) and a medical exam at designated points during processing. Do not schedule the medical exam before being asked, as results expire after 12 months.

Step 6: Background and Security Checks

IRCC conducts security, criminal, and background checks on the sponsored person. This phase can add several months to the overall timeline, particularly if the applicant has lived in multiple countries.

Step 7: Decision and COPR

Once approved, IRCC will issue a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and, for those outside Canada, a Permanent Resident Visa. Your family member must land in Canada before both the COPR expiry date and the passport expiry date.

These figures represent IRCC's service standard based on current intake and staffing. Individual cases may take longer due to missing documents, complex histories, or requests for additional information.

Key 2026 Updates to Know

Quebec MIFI pause: Quebec's Ministry of Immigration paused acceptance of new spousal and partner sponsorship undertakings. This pause is expected to lift on June 25, 2026. If you or your partner intend to live in Quebec, watch for MIFI updates before filing.

No minimum income for most spousal sponsors: Unlike the Parents and Grandparents Program, most spousal and partner sponsorship applications do not require proof of minimum income. However, you must still sign an undertaking to financially support your sponsored partner for three years from the date they become a permanent resident.

Express Entry and Family Sponsorship: Sponsoring a spouse does not prevent you from using Express Entry yourself if you are eligible. Speak with a regulated consultant to understand how both programs interact for your situation.

Common Mistakes That Delay or Refuse Family Sponsorship Applications

Avoiding these errors can save you months of delays:

  • Incomplete or unsigned forms (IRCC returns incomplete applications without processing them)

  • Submitting outdated forms (IRCC forms are updated regularly; always download the latest version)

  • Missing evidence of genuine relationship (especially for relationships under two years)

  • Not disclosing all previous marriages or relationships

  • Submitting a medical exam before being asked

  • Missing the biometrics deadline after a request is issued

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Sponsorship Canada

How long does family sponsorship take in Canada? As of May 2026, outland spousal sponsorship takes approximately 16 months and inland takes approximately 25 months. Processing times change monthly based on IRCC's capacity.

Do I need a job or income to sponsor my spouse? For most spousal and partner sponsorship applications, there is no minimum income requirement. You must sign an undertaking to support your partner financially. Income thresholds apply to the Parents and Grandparents Program.

Can my spouse work in Canada while waiting? Yes, if applying inland, your spouse may be eligible for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) once IRCC acknowledges your application. This allows them to work for any employer in Canada while waiting.

What is the difference between inland and outland sponsorship? Inland is for spouses already in Canada; outland is for spouses abroad. Inland applicants can apply for an Open Work Permit but face longer processing times. Outland applicants generally receive a decision faster.

Can I sponsor my parents to Canada? Yes, through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This program uses an interest-to-sponsor pool and is subject to annual intake caps. A Super Visa is an alternative that allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years per visit.
