What Is GCKey and How Do You Use It for IRCC?

GCKey is the username and password you create to sign in to your IRCC secure account, one of two ways the Government of Canada lets you log in to file and track immigration applications online. It is not your application, and it is not the account itself: it is the key that unlocks the door. Mixing those up, or letting your GCKey go stale, is how people get locked out of their own file at the worst moment.
That last part is not hypothetical. A GCKey can be revoked, and once it is, you cannot get it back. IRCC's own secure account page says a GCKey is revoked if the sign-in is compromised or if you have not used it in the last two years, so an applicant who created one, waited, and came back to check on things can find the door simply will not open. Knowing what GCKey is, and what it is not, saves you that scramble.
What is GCKey?
GCKey is a Government of Canada sign-in service: a username and password you register once and then use to access your secure online account with IRCC and other federal services. When you apply for most immigration programs through the IRCC secure account, GCKey is one of the two sign-in options you can pick, the other being a Sign-In Partner. You choose one when you first create your account, and that choice is tied to your profile from then on.
For immigration, the IRCC secure account behind that GCKey login is where you file and manage things like work permits, Express Entry profiles, study permit extensions, visitor records, and citizenship certificate applications. The login is generic government plumbing. What sits behind it is your immigration file.

GCKey vs Sign-In Partner vs your IRCC account
Three terms get tangled together constantly, so here is the plain-language version. Think of it like getting into a building: GCKey and Sign-In Partner are two different keys, and the IRCC account is the room. You only need one key, and you use the same one every time.

So which key should you pick? If you have online banking with a participating Canadian bank, a Sign-In Partner means one less password to remember. If you would rather keep your immigration login completely separate from your bank, GCKey is the one to choose. Neither is more powerful than the other; they open the same room.
How to create and use a GCKey for IRCC
You do not need a personal reference code or anything from an application to make a GCKey. You create it during account sign-up:
Go to IRCC's official sign in to your IRCC secure account page and choose to register for an account.
Select GCKey username and password, then Sign Up on the Welcome to GCKey page.
Create your username, password, and recovery details, and add a recovery email so you can reset access later.
Set up two-factor authentication, a second step required every time you sign in, and save the recovery codes somewhere safe.
Finish creating your IRCC secure account, then start or link your application inside it.
A few practical notes from filing these: GCKey needs JavaScript and cookies turned on and a current browser, so an old phone browser is a common reason a login "fails." And do not reuse your GCKey username and password on any other website, both because IRCC says so and because a compromised credential is one of the two ways a GCKey gets revoked.

Common GCKey problems and how to fix them
The message that sends the most people searching is "your GCKey username and password have been previously revoked." A revoked GCKey cannot be recovered, so recovery steps will not help. Per IRCC, a GCKey is revoked when the credential is compromised or when it has not been used in the last two years. The fix is to sign up for a brand-new GCKey (or switch to a Sign-In Partner) and then, because it is a new login, link your existing application to the new account so your file appears again.
If you have simply forgotten your username or password, that is recoverable: use the Forgot your username and Forgot your password options on the Welcome to GCKey page, which is why a recovery email is worth adding when you sign up.
