What is portal 1 and portal 2 in IRCC: Portal 1 is the original IRCC Secure Account that most

applicants already use, and Portal 2 is a newer IRCC platform that requires an invite code to

access. If you have seen these terms on a forum, in a Reddit thread, or in an email from IRCC

and were not sure what they meant, here is exactly what each one does and which applies to

you.

What Is Portal 1 in IRCC?

Portal 1 is the original IRCC Secure Account, available at canada.ca. It has been the standard

online account for most applicants since IRCC moved applications online. Through Portal 1, you

can:

  • Submit applications for visitor visas, work permits, study permits, and permanent residence

  • Upload supporting documents

  • Check your application status

  • Read messages, letters, and document requests from IRCC


Anyone can create a Portal 1 account at any time. You do not need an invitation. Sign in using a

GCKey or a Sign-In Partner such as your bank’s online credentials.


What Is Portal 2 in IRCC?

Portal 2 is IRCC’s newer application platform. It requires an IRCC portal invite code to access.

IRCC emails this code to you when your specific application is eligible for the new system.

Without the invite code, there is no way to enter Portal 2.


Portal 2 is currently used for certain permanent residence applications. The interface looks and

works differently from Portal 1. If you have not received an invite code from IRCC, you do not

need Portal 2 and cannot access it.


Why Does IRCC Have Two Portals?

IRCC is modernizing its application system and migrating certain application types to Portal 2

gradually. During this transition, some files remain in Portal 1 while others move to Portal 2

based on the program and when the file was created.


IRCC has never officially called these systems “Portal 1” and “Portal 2” on its own website.

Those labels come from applicant communities online. The distinction is real, though, and

knowing which portal handles your file affects what steps you take.


Which Portal Should You Use?

Use Portal 1 unless IRCC has sent you an invite code. If IRCC emails you an invite code, follow

the instructions provided in that email to access Portal 2 for that application. It is possible to have

files in both portals at the same time if you have multiple active applications.


Do not attempt to enter Portal 2 without an invite code. Check your spam folder regularly. The

invite code email comes from a government email address and is sometimes filtered by email

providers.
