Canada eTA Indonesia Malaysia: what the May 26, 2026 change means for travellers

From May 26, 2026 at 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time, some citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia can fly to or

through Canada with an eTA instead of a visitor visa.

If you are planning a family visit to Surrey or business meetings in downtown Vancouver, this change can

make your trip smoother. It is not visa free entry for everyone, and it only applies to air travel. The rule is

targeted, and the details matter. In this post, we explain exactly who qualifies, when you still need a visitor

visa, and how to apply without last minute surprises.

We know this is time sensitive. Many of our clients are booking summer flights to YVR and are unsure

whether they need a visa or an eTA. Take a few minutes to check yourself against the new rule before you

buy tickets.

That is the central practical point: the Canada eTA Indonesia Malaysia update can save time for some

flyers, but it does not fix a weak visitor profile and it does not apply to land or sea travel.

Who qualifies under the Canada eTA Indonesia Malaysia update

Starting May 26, 2026 at 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time, you can apply for an eTA if all of the following are true,

based on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada:

  • You are a citizen of Indonesia or Malaysia.

  • You are traveling by air to Canada or transiting through a Canadian airport.

  • You either held a Canadian visitor visa in the last 10 years, or you currently hold a valid U.S.

nonimmigrant visa, such as a B1 or B2.

This is a facilitation measure for travelers who have already passed security checks with Canada or the

United States. It does not remove the visa requirement for everyone. If you plan to arrive by car, bus, train,

or boat, you still need a visitor visa. IRCC confirmed these points in its May 25, 2026 news release and on

What is an eTA, and how is it different from a visitor visa

An eTA is an electronic pre screening tied to your passport. It is used for air travel. A visitor visa, often

called a TRV, is a counterfoil visa placed in your passport.

Important differences:

  • An eTA is applied for online, is usually quick, and is valid for up to five years or until your passport

    expires, whichever comes first.

  • A visitor visa is required if you are not eligible for an eTA, and for entry by land or sea.

  • Neither document guarantees you entry to Canada. A border officer makes the final decision at the

airport. IRCC explains this on its eTA eligibility page.

If you already hold a valid visitor visa, you can keep using it. There is no need to switch to an eTA.

Air only, and when you still need a visitor visa

The new eTA path applies only to flights. If you plan to drive from Seattle to Vancouver, take a cruise to

Victoria, or arrive by train from the United States, you still need a visitor visa if you are otherwise visa

required.

The table below helps you decide quickly.

If you are flying soon and cannot afford delays, we can complete a focused eTA eligibility screen and set up

your application properly. You can reserve a consultation time and we will confirm your path, check your

passport details, and plan a fallback if needed.

Quick examples to check yourself

These short, real world style examples show how the rule works. If your facts are similar, your path is likely

the same.

  • Jakarta to Vancouver next week, valid U.S. B1 B2 in your passport. You are likely eTA eligible. Apply

online before you travel. Use the same passport for the eTA and the flight.

  • Kuala Lumpur to Toronto with a two hour connection only. Your Canadian visitor visa expired eight years

ago. You are likely eTA eligible because your prior visitor visa was issued within the last 10 years. Apply

online and carry your eTA approval email.

  • Summer family visit to Richmond, no U.S. visa, never had a Canadian visitor visa. You are not eligible

for eTA. Apply for a visitor visa with a clear purpose of travel and proof of ties at home.

  • Driving from the U.S. to North Vancouver to see relatives, valid U.S. B1 B2. You still need a visitor visa

because eTA does not apply to land entry.

How to apply for an eTA on or after May 26, 2026

If you are eligible, the steps are simple.

  • Confirm you qualify using the IRCC tool above.

  • Apply online for an eTA using IRCC's application portal.

  • Enter your passport details carefully. A single incorrect number can cause problems at check in.

  • Watch your email for the decision. Many eTAs are approved quickly, but some take longer if IRCC

    needs more checks.

  • Travel with the same passport you used for the eTA application.

Tip for Vancouver travelers: Lines can be long in peak season at YVR. Arrive early and carry your eTA

approval email in case the airline wants to verify it.

Not eligible or traveling by land or sea

If you do not meet the eTA rule, apply for a visitor visa. A complete file should show:

  • A clear reason for travel, such as a family event in Surrey, a wedding in Richmond, or business

    meetings in Burnaby.

  • Strong ties to your home country, including employment, family, and financial commitments.

  • Proof of funds and a realistic travel plan.

Canadian hosts inviting family or friends

If you are hosting Indonesian or Malaysian relatives in Metro Vancouver, help them choose the right path

early.

  • For eTA eligible flyers, share your address, visit plan, and Contact number to support smooth check in

    and arrival.

  • For visitor visa applicants, prepare a simple invitation letter that confirms your relationship, dates, where

they will stay, and who pays for what. If you are helping parents visit for a longer stay, you can also

review our update on Super Visa income requirements.

Our team supports hosts in Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Surrey,

and Richmond. We can draft invitation letters and review supporting documents to reduce refusal risk.

What happens next

  • IRCC systems and airline checks should reflect the change from May 26, 2026 at 5:30 a.m. Eastern

    Time.

  • Most eTAs are fast, but there is no guaranteed timeline. Do not book non refundable travel until your

    eTA or visa is approved.

  • Existing valid visitor visas remain usable. You do not need to reapply as eTA unless it is more

    convenient for your air trip.

If you are unsure which route is faster for your exact dates, we can compare timelines for you, including an

eTA attempt with a visitor visa backup if time allows. You can reserve a consultation time and we will map

your options and deadlines.
