PGWP processing time in Canada is approximately 90 to 180 days for online applications submitted from inside Canada as of June 2026. That is three to six months. Paper applications or applications from outside Canada take longer, typically four to seven months. If you want to understand the full post-graduation work permit program before diving into wait times, read our PGWP complete guide.
Here is what affects your wait time and what to do while your application is being processed.

Current PGWP Processing Times in Canada (June 2026)
IRCC does not publish a single service standard for PGWP applications the way it does for study permits or visitor visas. Processing times vary depending on how and where you apply.
Estimates as of June 2026 (IRCC processing times page, last updated June 10, 2026):
Online, from inside Canada: 90 to 180 days (approximately 3 to 6 months)
Paper application or from outside Canada: 4 to 7 months
Online applications submitted from inside Canada are processed fastest. This is the recommended approach for virtually all recent graduates who are still in Canada.
Applying from outside Canada requires a fresh visa office assessment and adds significant time. If you are a recent graduate who has left Canada before applying, expect the upper end of the range or longer.
What "processing time" actually covers
Processing time counts from the day IRCC receives your complete application to the day a decision is made. It includes biometric processing if biometrics are required. It does not include mailing time if you applied on paper.
If IRCC sends a request for additional documents or information, respond as quickly as possible. Delays in your response extend your overall wait time.
Why some PGWP applications take longer than expected
In practice, the most common reasons Amir Ansari, RCIC (licence: register.college-ic.ca), sees PGWP files get delayed fall into a few clear patterns.
Missing or delayed transcripts. IRCC requires proof that you have completed your program. If your designated learning institution has not yet issued an official transcript or graduation confirmation letter, your file may be flagged. Graduates from large Vancouver-area institutions like UBC, SFU, or BCIT sometimes apply before their graduation documents are finalized. Apply once you have the document in hand, not before.
Language test gaps for university graduates. Since 2024, IRCC requires proof of English or French language proficiency for graduates of university programs applying for a PGWP. Graduates who apply without an approved test result -- IELTS General Training, CELPIP, TEF Canada, or TCF Canada -- can expect delays or refusals. When I explain this change to students in my immigration law classes, it is consistently the update that catches people off guard, even those who have been researching PGWP carefully.
Program eligibility questions. IRCC narrowed the list of PGWP-eligible fields of study in 2024. Applications from graduates whose programs are not clearly on the approved list may be flagged for additional review, adding weeks to months to the timeline.
Applying from outside Canada. Graduates who leave Canada before applying face overseas processing timelines and additional steps. If you are planning a trip home after graduation, apply for your work permit before you travel.
If your PGWP application has been pending longer than the typical range and you are unsure what is causing the delay, this is a good moment to book a consultation. Amir Ansari, RCIC helps clients in Vancouver and across Canada review their PGWP files and respond to IRCC correspondence. Reserve a consultation -- a one-hour session can clarify your entire post-graduation immigration path.
What to do while you wait for your PGWP
If you applied before your study permit expired, you are protected under implied status. Under implied status, you can work full time in any job while IRCC processes your PGWP application. This protection applies only to inland applications submitted while your study permit was still valid.
If your study permit had already expired when you applied, you cannot work during the wait period, even if you applied within the 180-day PGWP eligibility window. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the PGWP process, and it catches graduates every year.
While you wait, use the time to gather documents for your next immigration step. Many PGWP holders go on to apply through the Canadian Experience Class via Express Entry or through the BC Provincial Nominee Program. Having your work history, language test scores, and credentials in order before your PGWP arrives puts you ahead.

The 180-day application window for PGWP
You have 180 days from graduation to apply for a PGWP. Graduation is defined as the date your institution confirms in writing that you have completed your program -- not the date of your convocation ceremony, which may be months later.
Apply as soon as you receive your graduation letter or transcript confirmation. Do not wait for the physical diploma. Delays in applying narrow your implied status window and, if your permit expires before you submit, remove your right to work during processing. Review the work permit processing time guide to understand how PGWP wait times compare to other permit types.
Frequently asked questions about PGWP processing time
How long does PGWP take to process in 2026?
Online PGWP applications submitted from inside Canada take approximately 90 to 180 days as of June 2026. Paper applications and applications from outside Canada run 4 to 7 months. IRCC does not publish a single PGWP service standard -- the general service standard for inside-Canada work permits is 120 days, but actual PGWP times vary by file.
Can I work while waiting for my PGWP?
Yes, if you applied before your study permit expired. You can work full time under implied status while IRCC processes your application. If your permit had already expired when you applied, you cannot work during the wait period.
How long is a PGWP valid?
The PGWP is valid for the same length as your completed program, up to a maximum of three years. A two-year diploma produces a two-year PGWP. A four-year degree still caps at three years.
What if my PGWP is taking longer than 180 days?
Check your IRCC online account for status updates. If you have maintained implied status, you can continue working. Contact IRCC through your account if there has been no movement for several months, and consider consulting a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant to review your file.
Does processing time include biometrics?
Yes. If biometrics are required for your application, that time is included in the processing time estimate.
